WALKING ST OSWALD'S WAY

St Oswald’s Way is a long-distance walking route, exploring some of the finest landscapes and fascinating history of Northumberland. The route links some of the places associated with St. Oswald, the King of Northumbria in the early 7th Century, who played a major part in bringing Christianity to his people.

From Holy Island (Lindisfarne) in the north, St. Oswald’s Way follows the stunning Northumberland coast, before heading inland across beautiful countryside to Heavenfield and Hadrian’s Wall in the south. Emma, who is one half of Stay On The Hill, recently set out on this fabulous route…

Storms, swamps & Shandy...

“A couple of friends and I decided to walk St Oswald’s Way earlier this year. We wanted to explore parts of our own county that we often miss by driving straight past. We decided to tackle the 97-mile route by starting in Hexham and finishing on Holy Island. It is possible to walk it all in 5-7 days, but we chose to take one day per week off work and taxied ourselves to and from the start of each section.

We battled some adverse weather conditions and muddy swamps one week, and then the following week, we were basking in sunshine, enjoying a cheeky shandy pitstop looking out across the North Sea

The contrast of scenery has been incredible – rustic, rural farmland; quaint, sleepy villages; ambling river paths; vast forests; wild moorland; tourist hot spots; dunes and impressive coastal castles. I have thoroughly enjoyed this adventure and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to explore more of our amazing region. We are now in discussion about what to do next – maybe Kielder to the Lake district!”

The Stay-cation boom

The Stay-cation boom of the last couple of years has been unprecedented and many businesses have had to “up their game” to keep up with the demand. At Stay On the Hill we are a small family run business and this enables us to keep in constant contact with all our customers, so we can respond to questions and queries immediately.

One of our key priorities is to listen to customers and implement changes and improvements based on their constructive feedback. We are a new business and believe we should continually strive to improve our facilities, after all the most important part of hospitality is a happy guest. We would like to help create memories and look forward to welcoming many returning customers this year.

Together for short lives Charity Ball

We recently donated an auction lot for the Together for Short Lives Charity Ball. The charity does amazing work for children’s palliative care and we were very keen to support those children and their families by helping to raise vital funds for children living with life limiting conditions in the UK.

We have been informed that the ball raised an astonishing £400,000 – our lot was extremely popular and sold for £600 which we have been told will help 240 families connect with their local children’s hospice. We look forward to welcoming the amazing couple who bid so generously and will ensure they have a memorable holiday here in Northumberland.

** Simon Cowell was also at the ball offering his support. A one off signed photo of himself in racing gear raised £10,000

Visit England – 4* Gold Award

The Laverick & Bothy had a recent visit from Visit England. A full inspection was conducted on all aspects of the accommodation and we are delighted to announce both cottages have been recognised as 4* star GOLD AWARD standard. Our hard work to get to this level of accreditation is a satisfying reward, however our journey has only just begun as we are always looking at ways to improve and strive to ensure all our guests enjoy an unforgettable holiday. Some of the specific highlights the assessor commented on are:

An enviable location with commanding views over the Tyne valley.

Peaceful and unspoilt.

Excellent soft furnishings noted, first class bedding and linens.

Spacious accommodations.

Last Minute Discount

Due to an unforeseen cancellation from a booked client, The Laverick & Bothy are BOTH available for some part of the next week and the weather forecast looks favourable with no sleet or snow forecast like we have encountered this week !!!

The three bed Laverick cottage is available from tomorrow for 7 nights from Friday 7^th May until Friday 14^th May, whilst the luxury one bed Bothy is available from Sunday 9^th for 5 nights. Minimum 3 night stay for both properties and a 20% DISCOUNT if booked through the website.

Congrats to @Hjem Restaurant

Many of our guest have travelled from all over the country to sample the culinary delights at Hjem Restaurant, which is located in a neighbouring village. We have yet to visit (although we are on the waiting list for our confirmed booking in the coming weeks) but have heard nothing other than outstanding and high quality food and service.

Earlier in the year, Inspectors from the world’s most prestigious restaurant guide have awarded Hjem a Michelin Star. We are extremely proud to support Northumberland’s only Michelin starred restaurant and many congratulations from all of us at Stay on the Hill, well done, fabulous achievement.
